Replacement Car Key: Dealer or Auto Electrician?

3 June 2026

Losing a car key or breaking a remote is stressful — and a quick search suggests the dealership is your only option at a hefty price. In many cases, a local auto electrician can supply and program a replacement for less. Here’s what you need to know.

Modern keys are electronic

Most cars built in the last two decades use a transponder — a small chip in the key that talks to the car’s immobiliser. The car won’t start unless it recognises the chip. That’s why you can’t just cut a new key at the hardware store; it has to be programmed to your vehicle.

The three parts of a car key

  1. The blade — the cut metal part that turns in the lock (or a mechanical backup inside a smart key).
  2. The transponder chip — programmed to your immobiliser so the engine will start.
  3. The remote — for central locking, programmed to your car’s body computer.

A full replacement involves cutting the blade, programming the chip and coding the remote. Smart/proximity keys add another layer of coding.

Dealer vs auto electrician

Dealerships can do all of this, but often at a premium and with a wait for parts. A well-equipped auto electrician has the key-cutting and programming gear to handle most makes and models on the spot — frequently at a lower cost. For common vehicles it’s usually a same-day job.

What to bring

Bring photo ID and proof you own the vehicle (registration papers). For security reasons we’ll verify ownership before programming any key.

Lost every key?

Even if you’ve lost all keys, it’s usually still solvable — it just takes a little longer because the system has to be put into programming mode from scratch. Talk to us about a replacement key or remote and we’ll let you know the options for your car.
